j'adore montreal
In November I went to Montreal to visit a couple of friends and spend the weekend absorbing some wonderful experiences. One of the highlights of the trip was putting together a fashion shoot on location there with an incredible team. I’ve been hanging onto these photos for a while, but here they are at last!

regarding retouching
In a digital photography world, one of the biggest debates (other than Canon vs Nikon - hahahah, clearly Canon*) is the place of retouching in the workflow. Personally, I believe that the digital darkroom is a natural extension of the conventional darkroom used by film photographers. It is not however, difficult to run across people who fervently disagree. They consider that retouching is...

behind the curtain
A little while ago I saw these amazing behind the scenes photos from a Fashion Week show. They were different from anything else I’d seen before, the typical runway shot or the really gorgeous, Russell James style images. Of course I can’t seem to find the spread anymore, but essentially what the photographer did was set up a mini studio backstage and shot the models right before they...

something sweet&sexy!
I got to work with Sam again a little while ago and the reason I love to do so (so often!) is because she has the greatest ideas for shoots, and she’s so incredibly talented! We force each other out of our comfort zones to try new things and always have such a blast doing so. Her Toronto modeling agency needed some shots of her in young, cute, hip lingerie and I was happy to trying out some...

seasonal changes, outfit inspirations!
As you know by now, I really love to not only create the images, but style the shoots as well. I was inspired by the change in the seasons and threw a shoot together with Sam. This shoot was soooooooooo last minute and I actually pulled everything for it in 45 minutes. Ridiculous!
I was a little iffy about the idea for this outfit, but really adored it on Sam.
I now own this hat….

lisa's portrait session
Sorry for the lack of updates recently, clearly I have been a busy bee (which is both awesome and stressful!). So, to apologize for the lack of updates, I’m going to play a bit of catchup in the next couple of days to cover the some of the shoots I’ve been doing.
I’m going to start with this wonderful late summer shoot that Lisa and I did together. Lisa initially came to me...

behind a beauty shoot pt. 2
In part one I chatted a little about what goes into making a beauty shoot beauty as well as how lighting and setup are so important in creating the framework for how you want the shoot to be portrayed. That was everything that happens on set and in camera. Here I will be going into a bit of detail on the flip side of the shoot, which I think is just as important, the editing/processing of the...

behind a beauty shoot pt. 1
I love shooting beauty. Really, I do. There is so much detail that goes into putting together a shoot and the little movements that make such a difference. A tilt of the head one way or another, a slight shift downwards and you have a whole new angle, a brand new shot. I suppose this goes for all shoots but there is an art to beauty.
Lise approached me as a new makeup artist needing to build her...

arielle & jasmine, sisterly love!
I love when people come to me because they want to give pictures as a gift! This is where Arielle and Jasmine come in, they wanted to surprise their mom with some updated images for her birthday! Apparently, they had one too many of the Sears portrait/random snapshots and wanted something a bit more intimate and themselves.
The girls did a great job of dressing for the shoot with simple...

lauren headshots
I got the lovely opportunity to work with Lauren of Lauren Ashley: Wedding and Events a little while back. Lauren needed updated headshots for her website and other internet presences (her facebook is awesome for example!) I love to try and get a good idea of what sort of image the client wants and Lauren knew she wanted something young, fun, but professional. I agreed that this was perfect and...

megan portfolio shoot
I always love being asked to help a model create or add to their portfolios because it gives me a chance to normally try something new at the same time as doing a variety of different looks in one day! Megan approached me to help her re-build her book after being signed with Orange Model Management in Toronto.
When the model asks me what I recommend, I typically say to do 3 solid looks which...

xo magazine shoot
You’ve already seen the outtakes from my shoot with XO Magazine, now its time for the whole story!
When the magazine told me that the theme for their newest issue, they gave a couple of key words that really inspired me. They wanted something classic, black and white (or colour), and perhaps pulled from film noir. I interpreted that as cinematic, Old Hollywood, and glamorous. We shot on...

newborn scarlett
You may remember the maternity images I did of Amanda and her family earlier this year, well! Scarlett finally arrived and I was blessed with the opportunity to go to Amanda’s home and photograph their newest addition! Scarlett was a bit older than the typical week or so that newborn photographs normally take place in, so she was awake and curious as to what was going on.
It was also...

michelle&jeff wedding
I first met Michelle because she modeled at Gemini which is where I source many local models from and work with them on their runway shows. It ended up being that the photographer the couple had for the big day became unavailable suddenly and Michelle contacted me to see if I could step in. Thankfully I was available to be there for their big day!
After the initial meeting with Michelle and Jeff,...

xo magazine - outtakes
I recently did a shoot for XO Magazine and got to play around with the idea of old Hollywood glam meets film noir, something that is just so beautiful and romantic. I will be posting a lot more about the shoot once the issue comes out at the end of August, but till then, here are a couple of outtakes:

miranda,jake&kaden family photos
I’ve known this family for a while and have even taken photos of them before at various social functions! However, Miranda approached me to get some pictures done of just the three of them and I couldn’t be happier to oblige! How could I be with three people as good looking as them?! We chatted about location and finally settled on a regional favourite, Waterloo Park, as the place to...

RE: which camera should i buy?
I think that once people find out that you know anything about cameras they seem to always want to know which camera they should buy or which camera you use to take pictures. I find it flattering in a way that people like my work enough to want to imitate or know more about it, though it is almost equally annoying when peopleĀ put so much weight on the equipment rather than the user. When I began...

tara's portfolio session
A little while ago Tara asked me to help her update her portfolio with a couple of nice simple shots that would show potential clients a variety of looks. I jumped at the chance as I have worked with Tara in the past on two different shoots and really love her look. We didn’t plan too much ahead for this shoot, just that we would meet at the studio, she would provide the clothing and then we...

q & a session
I ask people who follow me on various social media to submit questions that they may have pertaining to photography, myself, whatever! I’ve chosen a couple that I think people will maybe appreciate the answers to. If you want to submit a question, feel free to leave one here, on my facebook page, or via twitter!
Q: Your last set of before and afters were what you said basic, do you have an...

before & afters
As much as some photographers want their viewers and audiences to believe that their finished images look as they do from snapping the photo, most of us know that simply isn’t true. From taking the photo to the finished product, time can range from a couple minutes to a couple days. Personally, it typically takes me an hour/photo including the time sorting through the pictures from the...

time to pretend
I honestly think that one of the hardest things about submitting to magazines (and hopefully getting published!) is coming up with a name for the set. Sometimes its easier (like with my last shoot) and sometimes just nothing comes to me. In times like this I normally open up my iTunes and start browsing through song titles and album names hoping to be inspired or find something that suits what I...

good girls. badlands.
A while ago Sonia Ryan and I met up to discuss doing an EPIC boho inspired summer shoot. After chatting about it for a bit, we finally settled on a date and location as well as models and the whole nine yards. After all the specifics were sorted out I began contacting stores and pulling pieces for the shoot. The joys of the double life of a photographer&stylist!
I want to send out buckets of...

bermuda....bahamas....
One of the reason’s I feel so behind in everything right now is partially because I was away for a week in the Bahamas with my family. I know, I know, I can’t/shouldn’t complain but coming back with as much to do as I have to is actually a little stressful!
We traveled to the Great Exumas, Bahamas. Georgetown to be precise! I know when people think of the Bahamas they tend to...

a cousin's wedding
A wedding is always a really awesome place to be, especially when the bride and groom love each other as much as Maja and Andrew do! I was so excited to be able to attend my cousin’s wedding and of course brought along my camera to shoot the special occasion!
The reception was held at the Buffalo Yacht Club and was decorated absolutely beautifully! Walking in was breathtaking and one...

allison&ian engagement
Engagement photos are one of my favourite portrait type photos to do, especially when those involved have awesome ideas and are up for anything! This was the case with Allison and Ian. I was first approached with doing a sort of 50’s housewife themed engagement shoot, and absolutely loved the idea! So we began the day with Allison “baking” some delicious apple pie for her husband...

amanda&ryan maternity
Whenever I get asked to shoot something as special as a maternity shoot, I get really excited and a little bit nervous. As the photographer I want the images to be beautiful, creative, but long lasting and that is a hard combination to sometimes manage. However, when you do its such a great feeling!
What is special about Amanda’s maternity shoot is that she decided to involve the entire...

so, you want to model eh?
The following is a re-post from my other blog:
Disclaimer: I write this partially tongue in cheek, and partially with usable information that I give to all new models I work with. Though it is written with models who are beginning in the industry in mind, it realistically applies to anyone who is getting ready to be in front of a camera. Readers beware.
Righto! So, you are a pretty young thing...

greetings
For those of you who followed my other blog this one is going to be a bit more in the line of a traditional blog. I have decided it was time to seperate my original tumblr into two because having one for so many different things was too messy. So, “a place for the pretty” will remain that, a place for beautiful, inspirational images and videos and songs and “cornelia takes...
